Achilles Tatios (astronomer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Achilles Tatios ( Greek Ἀχιλλεὺς Τάτιος, Latin Achilles Tatius ) was an ancient Greek astronomer .

The origin and biography of Achilles are unknown. In the Suda , a Byzantine encyclopedia, he is mistakenly equated with the writer Achilles Tatios . It is classified in the 3rd century because on the one hand it quotes astronomers of the 2nd century, on the other hand it is quoted by Iulius Firmicus Maternus himself in the 4th century.

Two lost works are titled ἐτυμολογία and ἱστορία σύμμικτος. The first part of his writing περὶ σφαιρῶν with the title περὶ τοῦ πατρός has been rewritten as an introduction to the phainomena of Arat and has been preserved (along with smaller fragments).
