The axle load scale is a weight recording system for vehicles that is usually built into the road. In contrast to the classic weighbridge , which records the mass of an entire vehicle in one step and must therefore have at least the length of the vehicle center distance, the axle load weigher is only about 75 cm long. This length is necessary in order to be able to weigh vehicles with a double axle . All axles of the most common vehicle types can be weighed individually at 75 cm. The total weight is determined by automatically adding up the axle loads .

Axle load scales are also often used for quantity determination in agriculture. A platform length of 100 cm is necessary here due to the wheel dimensions. In order to correctly detect tandem axes, the scales require tandem axis detection in the form of sensors.

Static axle load scales record the mass at a standstill, while dynamic scales can determine the value of the total mass at speeds of typically 1 to 2 km / h using special algorithms and filters.

Most axle load scales are not calibratable in Germany and are only used for checking, not as a basis for calculation. Legal-for-trade axle trucks are also offered for use in industry, at border crossings and for mobile traffic controls.
