Residence of the abbot in Deir el-Muharraq monastery

Ad-Dair al-Muharraq ( Arabic الدير المحرق, DMG ad-Dair al-Muḥarraq ) is a Coptic- Orthodox monastery complex in Egypt . The name means "the burnt monastery" because it has been set on fire several times in its history. The last time there was an arson attack by the Muslim Brotherhood was in August 2013 . Historical documents and centuries-old writings were also destroyed.

The complex is located on the Nile south of the town of al-Qusair in the Asyut governorate , making it one of the few Coptic monasteries that is not in the desert.

There are three churches in the complex:

  • Old Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary (built in the 12th century)
  • New Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as St. George's Church (built 1878–1880)
  • Youngest Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary (built 1940–1964)
