Adam II (Bethsan)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adam II (* around 1107; † before 1161) was Lord of Bethsan in the Kingdom of Jerusalem .

He was the son and successor of Adam I of Bethsan from the French noble family Béthune .

Bethsan belonged to the crown domain of the King of Jerusalem from 1101 and was administered by Adam I. as castellan . Around 1120 the castellan Bethsan was raised to an independent rule and its castellan "Adam of Bethsan" was Lord of Bethsan. Since the date of Adam I's death has not been passed down, it is therefore unclear whether Adam I or Adam II was the first "Lord" of Bethsan.

Adam II was married and had at least one son, Guermond I , who succeeded him as Lord of Bethsan.

In a document of the Kingdom of Jerusalem from 1129, brothers named "Johannes" and "Hugo de Bethsan" appear as witnesses. Hugo is also mentioned in documents from the years 1147, 1150 and 1152. In the latter, "Hugo de Bethsan" is referred to as a friar from a monastery. It is unclear to what extent the two were related to Adam.
