Reinhold Röhricht

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reinhold Röhricht (born November 18, 1842 in Bunzlau ; † May 2, 1905 in Berlin ) was a German crusade researcher .

Life

Röhricht was born in Bolesławiec in (now Bolesławiec , Poland), the third son of a miller . He began his studies at the grammar school in Sagan (today Żagań ) and at the theological school in Berlin, where he graduated in 1866 with a licentiate . From 1868 he taught as a teacher at the Luisenstädtischer Realgymnasium in Berlin. From 1876 to 1904 he worked at the Humboldt High School in Berlin, first as a senior teacher and from 1882 as a professor . In addition, he published countless works on the history of the Crusades and the geography of Palestine. In 1904 he was forced to retire for health reasons. Röhricht died just a year later.

Crusade Explorer

Although Röhricht is still considered to be one of the most important German historians of crusade research, he is hardly considered in the relevant encyclopedias. That may be because he did not teach at any university and was not properly honored during his lifetime. In an obituary in an American historian journal, however, its importance was pointed out a year after his death. With his eight main works he wrote the most important contributions to the history of the Crusades ever written by a researcher. The historian Hans Eberhard Mayer , who had dealt in detail with the life and history of Röhricht's impact, says of its importance that Röhricht was more of an antiquarian than a historian, but nevertheless he laid the most important foundations for modern crusade research.
