Adatom

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In surface physics , adatom (= ad sorbed atom ) denotes an atom that is bound ( adsorbed ) to a solid surface .

This can mean both foreign atoms and atoms of the same type. The latter are distinguished from the rest of the surface in that they are not included in their main periodicity .

On the other hand, under suitable circumstances, adatoms can in general again result in a clearly defined (periodic) structure, which is also called a superstructure .

In molecular beam epitaxy , the crystal growth is based on the successive accumulation and diffusion of adatoms. A popular example of this is the epitaxial growth of graphs .
