The Address Verification System ( AVS ) is a system used to verify the identity of a person who has a credit card . The system checks the address provided on the credit card against the billing address. Other credit card security options include the CVV2 number and expiration date.

Example: AVS compares the billing address of a credit card holder. The address is e.g. B. 101 Main Street, Highland, CA 92346 . The AVS checks 101 and 92346. Sometimes the AVS also checks other data such as the apartment number .

From e-commerce -Onlineshops (especially in the USA) then incorrect data will be returned if z. B. the German spelling of the street name and house number are given.

Error message: “The transaction resulted in an AVS mismatch. The address provided does not match billing address of cardholder. "

With MasterCard and Visa, this service is only available for credit cards issued in the USA. American Express offers the Address Verification System for all cards.
