Apartment number

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An apartment or door number identifies a self-contained sub-unit, for example an apartment or an operating room, in a house made up of several such sub-units, and these may also extend over several floors of the same. In hotels and offices, room and / or room numbers are usually used instead .

The generic term in Austria is usage unit number , for residential and business units the terms Top. (with or without a period at the end) or top number more and more common.

Situation in Austria

Door numbers were introduced as so-called family numbers in the old Austrian provinces as early as 1777, seven years after the house numbers . The abbreviation Top has been widespread in Austria for apartment and door numbers since the 1990s . (from topos , Greek for "place") or top number that z. B. is also used officially in Vienna . According to the Condominium Act 2002, the term is used to identify condominium properties; these are entered in the land register with their top number, among other things .

A typical official address in Vienna (see Central Registration Register ) is therefore “1070 Vienna, Kaiserstraße 53, Stiege 2, Tür 19” (short: Kaiserstr. 53/2/19). On the doorbell panel of the house entrance, “ Top. 19 “must be read.

It is incremented as follows:

  • The numbering starts on the lowest floor , with the exception of the basement , so usually on the ground floor.
  • Within a floor, the numbering runs either clockwise or counter-clockwise. In rare cases also in a different or no system, depending on the architectural structure of the house / storey.
  • The numbering then continues on the next higher floor, up to the highest floor.
  • If a house has several stairs, the door numbering usually starts again with each staircase, but in some exceptions the numbering continues where the last door number of the previous staircase left off. This can be a disadvantage if, for example, a floor is structurally added to a staircase. In this case, however, you can get around by adding a number to the newly created apartments (e.g. a).
  • For reasons of superstition, 12a, 14 or even 18 were often used in apartment buildings instead of door number 13.

Guarantee of the clear assignment

When a house is built, the sub-units are given consecutive numbers. If later building subunits are subdivided into several or several are combined into one or even new floors with new subunits are added as a result of subsequent renovation work, number additions are used so that the other house subunits can still keep their numbers.

Styria

Until today, door numbers only had to be given and entered in the building authority's building register for buildings that were completed after July 1, 2014. This led to the fact that in 2016 46,000 Graz residents had a door number in the register, but due to the lack of an entry in the building register, it could not be checked. For another 65,000 people, no door number is entered in the register because it was not disclosed when registering or is simply not known. In total, around a third of Graz residents are incompletely entered in the population register.

Vienna

The State of Vienna provides detailed information on the numbering of usage units . The obligation applies to all buildings with more than one usage unit. The numbering starts on the ground floor and runs upwards, can integrate the floor using the format 101,…, 201,…, 301,…, but should not contain more than four digits. Subsequent merged units are given a number of the output units. If a new unit is created next to door number 15, it can be named with an alphanumeric addition, i.e. 15B. If there are aisles that run across several stairs, the door numbering can also run across all stairs.

Situation in Switzerland

In Switzerland, apartments as a sub-unit of a building are often given an apartment number. A distinction can be made between a really appropriate, physical apartment number and a purely administrative apartment number, which is only used by administrations and is mentioned in rental contracts. We recommend an apartment number from three apartments per floor .

Situation in Poland

In Poland, apartments as sub-units of residential buildings are almost always provided with apartment numbers. Even more: Since there are only rarely letter boxes, door or bell signs with a name - in recent times also for security reasons - the apartment number in Poland is the only reliable and practically binding identification feature of an apartment (and its residents). This is particularly important when sending mail: Apartment numbers are either appended to the house number with a slash, e.g. B. "20/55", or with the help of a small "m" (for mieszkanie = apartment ), z. B. "20m55".
