adlr.link ( acronym for: Advanced Delivery of Library Resources ) is the name for the specialist information service for media , communication and film studies , under which the Leipzig University Library operates a central search portal for academic researchers. The specialist information service has been funded by the German Research Foundation since 2014 .

description

Since 1998, the Leipzig University Library has been the seat of the Special Collection Area (SSG) 3.5: Communication and media studies, journalism. The old stock of monographs in the SSG comprises around 30,000 volumes and 400 specialist journals. As part of the special collection area, the virtual specialist library medien buehne film was also developed and operated together with the Frankfurt University Library from 2007 to 2012 . Since the end of 2013, special collection areas have not been funded by the German Research Foundation. Instead, the funding program for the specialist information services was re-introduced.

The aim of the specialist information services is to give scientists quick and direct access to specialist literature and information relevant to research. As a nationwide system, they complement the local information infrastructures of universities and research institutions. Subject information services develop different offers depending on the subject. For example, tools for accessing digital resources can be provided, but the inventory of conventional publications can also be deepened. Specialized information services provide information for science as a supplement to the basic services provided by academic libraries. In contrast to the special collection areas, specialist information services no longer aim to collect and archive publications as comprehensively as possible.

The search portal is accessible to anyone online for research. The surface of adlr.link enables a subject-specific search in a central search index that is fed from several sources. The index contains, among other things, the entire old stock of the former SSG, a list of newly published works that is regularly updated, numerous freely accessible online resources and open access documents, as well as an extensive article index that enables research in scientific journals at article level. In March 2018, the index consisted of over 1.3 million data records. The portal takes into account existing locally available access licenses and book stocks in the user's home library and displays them on a user-specific basis. Documents that are not available or that are not available to the user may be provided by a delivery service. In addition, some resources in a special specialist information service license are only accessible to registered users. Printed publications are either newly acquired and sent directly to the user or, if they are available, can be ordered via interlibrary loan .

In the future, audiovisual media should also be identified in adlr.link and, where possible, direct access to audiovisual works should be made possible.

Technically, the search portal is based on the open source software VuFind . The software enables a multi-faceted search across different data sources. In contrast to metasearch , the search results are displayed in a list of results using a text-statistical ranking. The faceting then makes it possible to further restrict the results without having to consider a hierarchical structure.

adlr.link is developed in close cooperation with the German Society for Media and Communication Studies (DGPuK) and the Society for Media Studies (GfM).
