VuFind is a library search system. The Discovery System , developed as free software at Villanova University (USA), provides the user with a simple search mask and can replace a conventional OPAC ( Online Public Access Catalog ) or combine several OPACs and other sources.

Range of functions

An early version (0.8.2) contained the following basic functionality:

search

  • Facet search with the option of removing selected facet values
  • Advanced search with Boolean logic and restriction to language, media type, signature
  • Sorting of search results according to relevance or other attributes such as author name, call number, year of publication, title

display

  • Location and availability in the search results list via an integrated non-blocking query (AJAX) of a local library system (ILS)
  • Similar titles to the selected title
  • Localization (multilingualism) and stable URLs

Actions

More recent VuFind versions enable standardized access to proprietary library systems via the open DAIA protocol for recording the availability of media and PAIA (Patrons Account Information API) for user account connection. A number of specific ILS drivers are also included in VuFind. The OpenURL standard can be used as a link resolver to link electronic resources .

distribution

As a discovery system under the free and free GPL license, VuFind is one of the most frequently used search systems in libraries and network systems internationally. The project wiki lists around two hundred entries from installations. These include, for example, Swissbib , as well as an offer to research part of the national license holdings in Germany. Numerous Saxon university libraries jointly implement the “ finc ” project and operate VuFind installations. VuFind is also used to operate the Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE) open access search engine . Some specialized information services for science rely on VuFind, for example adlr.link or beluga of the State and University Library Hamburg .

The German-speaking VuFind community has been meeting annually since 2012 to exchange experiences and ideas for the use and further development of VuFind.
