Admiral (thermometer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An admiral is a specific seawater thermometer that was supplied on board by the former DHI - today the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency - for the creation of weather data. It consisted of a kind of small rubber bucket with a permanently mounted thermometer in it. This device hung on a suitably long leash. With the admiral, sea water was drawn from the main deck of the moving ship at the set weather observation times and then the temperature was read.
