Adnexa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As the adnexa ( German the appendage , Latin plural adnexa or German adnexes ) one usually designates the ovary (Latin the ovary , Greek the oophoron ) and the fallopian tube (Latin the tuba uterina , Greek the salpinx ); The term male adnexa is used more rarely for the spermatic duct , the seminal vesicle , the prostate gland and the epididymis . The term is also used as a synonym for skin appendages and for the appendage organs of the eye .

The general term for the female reproductive organs was introduced because they appear like appendages of the uterus . Before the introduction of imaging techniques in medicine, inflammation in the area of the adnexa could not be differentiated between fallopian tubes and ovaries by palpating with both hands. In addition, they are often affected together in inflammation , that is, fallopian tube infections very often spread to the ovary. The joint inflammation of both organs is called adnexitis . In veterinary medicine , the term "adnexa" is rather uncommon, since the uterus itself has two long extensions (uterine horns) in non-primates or is even designed in the form of two completely independent tubes. The synonymous term oophorosalpingitis is used here for inflammation .
