The Adolfstraße is a street in the east of Detmold Old Town. Together with Auguststrasse in the south and Bruchmauerstrasse in the west, it runs along the old city wall, the remains of which are still standing in many places or have been built over by the houses.

Adolfstraße got its current name in memory of the bookbinder Adolf Schumacher , who lived in the street from 1851.

history

At the beginning of the 17th century, a lack of building land meant that the city administration of Detmold allowed its citizens to build petty bourgeois houses on the city wall. In 1613 this led to a dispute with the local residents, who were deprived of light and sight from the simple buildings and who posed a fire risk due to their thatched roofs. Regardless of this, the construction activity on the street “Behind the Wall ??” continued, and over the years an almost continuous row of simple half-timbered houses emerged.

In the 1960s, houses 11 and 13 were owned by the city of Detmold. At that time, house number 11 threatened to collapse due to the poor condition of the building structure. Investigations showed that the renovation of the building would amount to a reconstruction, so the Detmold City Council decided to demolish it first. However, the commitment of state funds from the monument preservation fund caused a rethink, and so in October 1967 it was decided to keep the building. In 1968 the city also acquired house number 15, which was included in the concept. For the reconstruction work, the buildings in question were completely removed, the foundations were renewed and the houses were then rebuilt. For the half-timbering, the oak wood of a barn from Löwendorf that was bought for this purpose was used , which also came from the 17th century.

Characteristic

With the exception of number 4, the houses on Adolfstrasse only have odd numbers, so they are on the side facing outwards from the city and are under monument protection. With the exception of the final building number 25, which was built later after the breakthrough of the city wall towards the north, the buildings sit on the city wall and integrate it as the eastern ground floor wall. The city wall is also registered as an architectural monument in the list of monuments of the city of Detmold.

The house numbers 1 to 15 form a continuous row of half-timbered houses on the eaves. The buildings consist of a basement, mezzanine and a protruding upper floor, which is partially supported by profiled lugs . The gable roofs are covered with red tile pans.

Corner house no. 1 has a metal shop window on a brick base on the gable side facing Exterstrasse. This historical extension is part of the monument.

Adolfstrasse is crossed by Schülerstrasse in an east-west direction. The development continues north of Schülerstrasse with houses 17 to 23, which were built in the second half of the 17th century. In contrast to the houses to the south, the upper floor overhangs the city wall, while it is flush with Adolfstrasse. At number 19, the ground floor was made of solid construction, only the upper floor consists of half-timbering. At number 21, the entire street facade is solid and has segmented arched windows, half-timbering can only be seen here on the back above the city wall.

The northern end to Meierstrasse is house no.25, which is actually a semi-detached house (the other part bears house number Meierstrasse 17). The basement, two-storey solid building in classical style with a crooked hip roof was built in 1845. A single flight of stairs leads to the entrance. The memorial also includes a workshop building in Adolfstrasse, which was added to an existing workshop from the 19th century in 1938 for master locksmith G. Ackermann. The basement and ground floor are massive, the top floor consists of half-timbered houses. Four large arched segment windows on the eaves side provide light.
