Adriano Maleiane

Adriano Afonso Maleiane (born November 6, 1949 in Matola , Portuguese East Africa ) is a Mozambican financial economist and politician ( FRELIMO ). Maleiane was long-time governor of Mozambique's central bank Banco de Moçambique (1991-2006). Since January 19, 2015, he has been the chief minister for the economy and finance in the Nyusi cabinet .

education

Adriano Afonso Maleiane was born on November 6, 1949 in the Maputo suburb of Matola . He studied economics at the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane and received his master's degree in finance from the University of London .

First career in the banking sector

Maleiane began his career in 1973 at Casa Bancária de Moçambique , and in 1974 he moved to Banco Comercial de Angola . With the complete nationalization of the banking sector in the wake of Mozambique's independence, he moved to the new only bank in Mozambique, the Bank of Mozambique ( Banco de Moçambique ). There he took on a wide variety of tasks, including head of the Department for Import / Export Business, the Department of Credit Management and was also temporarily Vice-Governor of the bank.

Excursion to the citrus industry

In 1983, Maleiane switched to the state citrus farm of Maputo ( Empresa Estatal Citrinos de Maputo ) by presidential decree . In 1984 he took over the management of the Agriculture Department in the Ministry of Agriculture.

Central Bank Governor

In 1986 Maleiane moved back to the Bank of Mozambique. He accompanied the reform process of the bank, which in 1991 completely restructured itself in the course of turning to the market economy , outsourced the commercial bank and took over the tasks of a traditional central bank . From 1991 he also took over the duties of governor of the central bank. Among other things, Maleiane led the debt restructuring negotiations with the creditors of the London and Paris clubs , at the end of which a large part of Mozambican old debts was canceled. He retired as the bank's governor in 2006.

Tasks in the private sector

After leaving the Bank of Mozambique, Maleiane worked for various private finance and insurance companies, including a. MaleFinanceiro and MaleSeguros. Most recently he headed the Banco Nacional de Investimentos .

Change to the Ministry of Economics and Finance

After Filipe Nyusis was elected President of Mozambique in October 2014, he appointed Maleiane head of the newly merged Ministry of Economy and Finance on January 19, 2015. Since mid-February 2015, Maleiane has also been a ex officio member of the Board of Governors of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Honors

Maleiane received the French Order of Merit ( Ordre national du Mérite ) in the rank of Knight ( Chevalier ) in 1998 , and in the same year the Order of Merit of the President of the Republic of Mozambique. In 2005 Maleiane received the Eduardo Mondlane Medal, Second Class, and the Mozambican State Diploma.
