The Aerial Cableway Hartbeespoort , also Harties Cableway , Hartbeespoort Dam Cableway or Magaliesberg Cableway , is a gondola lift on the Hartbeespoort Reservoir ( English Hartbeespoort Dam ) in South Africa . It is located around 35 kilometers west of Pretoria on the border of the Northwest Province and leads to a panoramic summit of the Magaliesberg , where there is also a take-off point for paragliders . It is one of the only three cable cars in South Africa.
history
The first system was built by Gerhard Müller Dietlikon (GMD) from Switzerland and was put into operation in 1973. The gondola lift was equipped with open four-seater cabins that were coupled to the surrounding rope with Müller clamps . In 2005 the railway was in need of repair due to inadequate maintenance and operations were stopped.
The old facility was taken over in 2010 by the Zargodox company, which wanted to promote tourism in the Hartbeespoort region. It was completely overhauled and returned to service in August 2012.
technology
The system, built in 2010, is 758 meters long and overcomes a height difference of 378 meters. It can transport 500 people per hour. CWA's 14 cabins each offer space for six people. The galvanized suspension and haul rope was supplied by Fatzer from Romanshorn . The system is controlled via a touchscreen , the distance between the individual cabins on the rope is regulated automatically.
