The airfield Aleksotas ( ICAO code : EYKS ) is an airfield in the southern district Aleksotas the city of Kaunas in Lithuania .

history

The airfield was already used as a landing site for war airships with an airship hangar during the First World War . It was later expanded for transport aircraft and then initially served as a civilian airfield. Since the completion of the new international airport Kaunas (Oro Uostas Karmėlava in Lithuanian) , located east of Kaunas , near the town of Karmėlava, the Aleksotas airfield has only been used as a sports airfield. The airfield itself is in very good condition, equipped with an asphalt runway (without anti-skid), a parallel taxiway with several accesses. However, it does not have runway lighting , approach control or other approach aids.

The Lithuanian Aviation Museum is also located on the site with numerous exhibits of Lithuanian (and related Russian) aviation history, as well as a memorial with memorial plaques for all of the country's aviators who died in an accident. The square bears the nickname of the two Lithuanian aviation pioneers Darius and Girėnas , who also adorn the 10 litas banknote. There are some Jak-52s on the site , with which visitors can take part in the aerobatic demonstrations that take place every weekend. In addition, self-built microlight aircraft, motor trikes and other aircraft can be examined in action. In the western part of the square is one of the forts that surround the Kaunas and the Memel in this area.
