Aflatoun International is a Dutch non-governmental organization that focuses on educating children about their rights and responsibilities and managing financial resources through social and financial education. The Aflatoun programs, consisting of Aflatot, Aflatoun, Aflateen and Aflateen +, are currently implemented by 192 partner organizations in 102 countries. Furthermore, Aflatoun has trained over sixty thousand teachers on their programs (as of 2018). Aflatoun International reaches over 5.4 million worldwide every year, 51% of whom are girls. 60% of the children / adults who have benefited from one of the programs save money. Aflatoun has been working as a social franchise since 2018, which means that the programs can only be obtained with a membership against annual payment. It is an attempt to be less dependent on funding fluctuations.

Social and Financial Education

Aflatoun International develops curricula in the field of social and financial education for children and adults, contextualizes and adapts them, with the help of partners, to country or region-specific requirements and social and political problems. The programs are designed to help children believe in themselves, to know their rights and duties, to understand and practice saving and investing, and later to start their own businesses. This includes organizing social campaigns, setting up savings systems and starting small financial companies.

origin

The idea comes from Jeroo Billimoria, an Indian citizen who grew up among the street children of Mumbai and worked there for several years. Since many children were quite entrepreneurial, she felt it was important that children not only have a strong sense of self and understand their rights, but also manage their own resources in order to use them meaningfully later and to realize their ideas.

The Aflatoun concept was first tested 18 years ago in India. In this case, financial concepts were built into a school program for children's rights. Their interactive learning concept with games, activities and songs was very well received by the children. Due to the success in India, the organization expanded to other countries, but adapted the programs to the culture, politics and country-specific situation.

Aflatoun International was founded in Amsterdam in November 2005. Today Aflatoun's programs are active in 102 countries. In 2008, with the help of the Dutch Princess Maxima Aflatoun, a global campaign for social and financial education for children was launched with the ambitious goal of reaching 1 million children by 2010.

Programs

Afaltoun mainly implements 3 curricula that have been translated into 45 languages and are currently implemented in 26 national educational programs in Africa, Eastern Europe, South America and Asia. All curricula are in line with the commitments set out in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals that all boys and girls should have access to early childhood development, care and good education.

Aflatot: Aflatot is a learning program aimed at children between the ages of 3 and 6 and emphasizes the crucial role of families in this context. Positive learning experiences in early childhood form the basis for future success. The program aims to help young children develop the necessary life skills and attitudes to successfully continue their education in later years.

Aflatoun: Aflatoun's core program focuses on elementary school age children, as this is the easiest time to absorb new attitudes and behaviors. It is a fundamental phase of personal development where literacy, arithmetic, and basic everyday skills are learned. Aflatoun's curricula can be used both in formal elementary education and in the informal sector (for children who have no access to school).

Aflateen: The Aflateen program is specially tailored to young people and encourages them to question their identity and the world around them. Young people between the ages of 14 and 19 work with modules that combine elements of social and financial education. It sensitizes them to social and political issues such as gender inequality, environmental issues or religious concepts and teaches them critical thinking. Furthermore, they get to know money and markets that influence their lives and help them to operate in an increasingly complex and demanding job market. The curriculum is now supplemented by Aflateen Digital, an online e-learning platform for young people.

The Aflatot, Aflateen and Aflatoun programs will also be adapted to the different socio-political and economic contexts in which they are implemented. Projects are cocoa cultivation in Ghana, agribusiness in Tanzania, gender equality in China and peacebuilding in Syria.
