The Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (Anvisa, ANVISA) is the Brazilian National Authority for Health Surveillance, founded in 1999 and based in Brasília .

The aim of ANVISA is to promote the protection of the health of the population. The authority is linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Health ( Ministério da Saúde ) via a management contract , but is administratively and financially independent of it.

The tasks of ANVISA include the coordination of the National System for Health Monitoring (Sistema Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária) and the National Program for Blood and Blood Products, as well as the approval of drugs and the registration of imported food .

In addition, ANVISA supports the Brazilian Patent Office Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial (INPI) in the patenting of medicines, stipulated in law nº 10.196, of 2001. In a - controversial - article it says “The granting of patents for pharmaceutical products and processes is required the prior consent of Anvisa. "

ANVISA was established during the government of President Fernando Henrique Cardoso in 1999 (Law nº 9.782 of January 26, 1999). It is led by a five-person directors' committee, currently (2016) chaired by the physician Jarbas Barbosa da Silva Júnior. The tasks correspond to those of the Robert Koch Institute in Germany.
