Agathon (potter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Agathon ( ancient Greek Ἀγάθων ) was a native of the 2nd quarter of the 5th century BC. A potter and possibly also a vase painter in Athens .

A red-figure painted pyxis with a representation of Zeus and Hera has been preserved from Agathon , which is now in the Berlin Collection of Antiquities (Inv.No. VI 3308). While John D. Beazley still led the painter as an unknown Agathon painter , modern research considers it likely that Agathon painted the Berlin pyxis himself. The style of painting is close to the so-called Lewis painter . Based on the style, a number of other red-figure works are ascribed to the performing painter.
