history

The prehistoric settlement of Agios Petros, now largely covered by the sea, was a permanent settlement during the Neolithic Age. The site was first researched archaeologically by Dimitrios Theocharis . The excavation under the direction of Nikos Efstratiou in 1981 revealed three consecutive settlement phases. These finds were published in 1985.

The main settlement period is assigned to the late Early to Early Middle Neolithic of Thessaly on the basis of painted ceramics with highly developed decorative motifs. Dating with the 14 C method revealed a settlement period from 5700 to 5500 to 3800 BC. BC at the same time as the pre- Dimini phase. A second settlement phase existed from 3500 to 2000 BC. Chr.
