The Agnessteg in Esslingen am Neckar is an old canal crossing that connected the city center with the Schelz gardens.

history

Esslingen is traversed by a canal system that is due to the original course of the Neckar: The Hammer Canal divides into Roß and Wehrneckar canals just before the Maille ; the various arms of these canals unite again at the other end of the Maille a few meters before the St. Agnes Bridge to form a relatively wide section. Since the 16th century at the latest, there has been a passage over this canal section at the St. Agnes Chapel following the Agnestörle, initially in the form of a wooden bridge, and from 1579 by a stone arch bridge with two pillars. This was destroyed by a flood in 1744, but then rebuilt. It was probably during this phase that the Agnessteg received its baroque bridge balconies. In 1893 it could have been torn down after the construction of the St. Agnes Bridge, which ran parallel up the canal a few meters; However, due to its age and its decorative effect, it was already considered worthy of preservation. In contrast to the St. Agnes Bridge, it cannot be used by vehicles.

The bridge piers have icebreakers ; Traces of a cartouche held by two figures are visible here. The original stone parapet of the Agnessteg was replaced by an iron railing around 1857, which in turn was replaced in 2005.
