The St. Agnes Bridge in Esslingen am Neckar is an iron bridge for vehicles and pedestrians. It dates from the 19th century.

History and description

The St. Agnes Bridge was built in 1893 by the Esslingen machine works based on plans by Julius Kübler. The historicist cast iron railing was supplied by the Fritz Müller machine factory . The single arch, riveted iron bridge has abutment of concrete , with masonry of red Main sandstone are blinded.

The bridge was intended for vehicles and pedestrians from the start. It connects Esslinger Bahnhofstrasse, which was laid out from 1857, with Abt-Fulrad-Strasse, which leads to the market square, and thus connects the station to the old city center.

It spans the canalised water of the Neckar , which flows through the city center. A few meters above the bridge, the canal arms, into which the Hammer Canal divides on the Maille , flow together again, only to separate again a little further down at Lohwasen. When the bridge was built, the Geiselbach, which also flowed at this point, was arched over.

Almost immediately next to the St. Agnes Bridge, which is still open to vehicle traffic, there is still a pedestrian bridge, the Agnessteg .
