Agricultural Ontology Service

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Agricultural Ontology Service (AOS) (German: Landwirtschaftlicher Ontologie-Service) is a project of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) that was started in 2000.

The aim of this project is the development of ontologies from existing agricultural classification systems such as thesauri and taxonomies . The application of such a standard is intended to improve the indexing and retrieval of bibliographic resources on agricultural topics. This enables a more effective interaction between the partners working in this field. The ontological connections developed help in particular to avoid multiple searches.

Several vocabularies exist in the agricultural sector such as the FAO's AGROVOC thesaurus, the CAB thesaurus, and the United States' National Agricultural Library Thesaurus . These are to be brought together by the Agricultural Ontology Service. The formal description language Web Ontology Language is used as a basis.
