AIDS - the African legend

AIDS - Die Afrikalegende is a documentary film that was made by Heimo Claasen and Malte Rauch and was released in 1989. The film spreads the conspiracy theory created by the KGB in Operation Infection and the biologist Jakob Segal that the HIV pathogen is said to have originated in US laboratories.

Controversy

In 2014, Douglas Selvage and Christopher Nehring published the BStU publication The AIDS Conspiracy - The Ministry of State Security and the KGB's AIDS disinformation campaign . In it, the two researchers report in the archives of the Bulgarian secret service Darschavna Sigurnost that they found two documents which deal with a film about AIDS. In November 1988, the two Stasi officers Wolfgang Mutz and Hans Pfeifer from the Stasi department HVA X, which is responsible for disinformation in western media, reported that a West German film was being prepared which would deal with the AIDS problem. In September 1989 it was reported that West German donors paid 80,000 DM , while "German comrades" paid 40,000 DM. The film is said to have been shown three times on West German television. The only film that ran three times on West German television between November 1988 and September 1989 and had AIDS as its topic is the film Aids - The African Legend .

The WDR , which showed the film first, could not give any information about the financing of the film. In 2013, Classen and Rauch denied that money for the film flowed from the Stasi or that they even worked for the Stasi in any other way. Rauch sued the report in 2015 and initially achieved that the BstU passages about the financing of the film were blacked out. The Federal Court of Justice , however, did not consider the statements to be unlawful in terms of the applicable principles of lawful state information.
