Lists of aviation accidents |
The Air Botswana flight accident in 1999 with an ATR 42-320 with the aircraft marks caused A2 ABB on 11 October 1999, the Botswana pilot Chris Phatswe. He was the only person who died as part of the pilot's suicide . A total of three ATR 42-320 aircraft operated by Air Botswana were destroyed in the accident .
Phatswe is said to have announced suicide several times in advance to staff at the airport without giving any reason. At the time of the accident , he is said to have been unfit to fly for medical reasons .
Happenings
Phatswe took control of the plane at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport and circled the airfield for about two hours. He stressed several times over the radio that he wanted to steer the plane into the Air Botswana building because he had fallen out with the airline's management. Phatswe requested, among other things, a conversation with the then President Festus Mogae , who was out of the country, which is why a connection to the then Vice-President Ian Khama should be established.
Phatswe ultimately crashed deliberately at around 200 knots - he may have run out of fuel beforehand - in two other aircraft of the same type from Air Botswana that were parked on the apron . He wiped out almost the entire fleet of Air Botswana at the time. Phatswe probably did not carry out his announcement that he would fly into the Air Botswana building, as there were people in it.
The airport had previously been evacuated on the instructions of General Tebogo Masire , who was in contact with Phatswe in the tower .
