On February 12, 1979, a Vickers Viscount crashed on Air Rhodesia Flight 827 after the aircraft was hit by a surface-to-air missile .

Shortly after take-off from Kariba Airport , an anti-aircraft missile from the Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) hit the Air Rhodesia machine on the inner left engine (engine 2). The ZIPRA was the military arm of the Zimbabwe African People's Union . The plane caught fire and crashed uncontrollably. All 59 inmates were killed. It is the worst aviation accident in Zimbabwe to date .
Others
Only five months earlier, ZIPRA had shot down another Vickers Viscount from the company. This carried out the Air Rhodesia flight 825 .
