Air Division

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Air Division (English for "Air Division ") was the name for large units of the US Air Force , which were classified in the military hierarchy between the Numbered Air Forces ("air fleets") and the Wings (squadrons). Normally, an Air Division was subordinate to a Numbered Air Force and in turn comprised several wings and independent elements. The concept of the Air Divisions was created during or after the Second World War; In the early 1990s, the last associations of this type were then dissolved through restructuring.

Depending on the purpose, the alternative names Airlift Division , Strategic Aerospace Division , Strategic Missile Division and Space Division were also used. A total of 101 associations existed.

The air force divisions of the Bundeswehr are roughly comparable . On the other hand, there is only a similarity of names and no organizational connection to the Airborne Divisions and Air Assault Divisions of the US Army .
