The Aitbai Mosque (2009)

The Aitbai Mosque ( Kazakh Айтбай мешіті Aitbai meschiti , Russian Мечеть Айтбая Metschet Ajtbaja ) is a mosque in Qysylorda, Kazakhstan . Built between 1875 and 1878, it is now the city's oldest preserved monument.

history

The mosque was built on the initiative of Aitbai Baltabajew, a businessman from Bukhara . This also largely financed the construction. Construction on the structure began in 1875 and was completed three years later. The construction costs at that time were 40,000 rubles . With the increasing persecution and suppression of religious activities in the Soviet Union , the mosque was closed by the Bolsheviks in the mid-1920s . From 1926 it served as a simple warehouse, after which it was used as accommodation for deported people. In the 1950s, the building was converted for use as a cinema before it was used as a boarding school. From 1970 to 1981 a carpet weaving mill produced goods there. In 1982 the mosque was added to the list of historical and cultural monuments of republican importance and placed under state protection.

In 1990 the building was returned to its original purpose as a mosque. In the following years it was restored and the construction of a minaret was financed by donations . The mosque was renovated again in the 2000s. It was criticized that major changes were made to the building, whereby the cultural value of the mosque had been lost.
