Ajax Records (Quebec)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ajax Records was a North American record label based in Quebec , Canada and Chicago , Illinois , that existed from 1921 to 1926.

The label was a sub-label of the Compo Company in Lachine , Quebec. The head of Ajax Records was HS Berliner, the son of the record pioneer Emile Berliner . The company released its first record in October 1923 and the last in the summer of 1925. The audio quality of the releases was very high for the time. The company was headquartered in Quebec, with a branch in Chicago, but no recording studio. The company's studios were located in Montreal and New York City . The plates were pressed in Quebec, but only sold in the US. Sales outside of the Northwest US were low.

Artists who published on Ajax included Rosa Henderson , Edna Hicks, Viola McCoy, Monette Moore, and Mamie Smith . In addition to these, records were also released on Ajax, the masters of which they received from Pathe Records and the Plaza Music Company.

Today there is a small indie label in Chicago called Ajax Records.
