Akademie 55plus is a voluntary and non-profit association for self-organized education for people aged 55 and over. This was founded in 2006 in Darmstadt , meanwhile there is the Academy 55plus also in Kassel . The aim of the association is to offer people who are about to retire or who have already retired new opportunities to shape their lives.
Origin and organization
The academy was founded in Darmstadt in May 2006 on the initiative of Heidrun Bleeck based on the model of the English University of the Third Age as a non-profit registered association. Around 12% of the more than 1,500 members now work actively by offering events, advising or doing organizational work. The board of the Academy 55plus, which consists of nine members, is elected for a two-year term by the general assembly. He is supported by an also elected advisory board .
With the support of the association, an Academy 55plus was founded in Kassel in June 2008 .
Significance for the city of Darmstadt and the region
According to the 2012 demography report for the city of Darmstadt, an enormous increase in the population over 60 years can be expected by 2025 and beyond. While it is the job of the city of Darmstadt to secure the necessary infrastructure that enables older people to lead a self-determined life and to continue the planning of care for the elderly , the Academy 55plus concept offers older people who are looking for contact and new challenges a field of activity . They can pass on skills that were acquired during their professional activity in lectures and courses or open up new areas of interest, for example by learning a new language, dealing with the Internet and new media or taking advantage of cultural offers in the region and beyond.
Two thirds of the members come from Darmstadt, the remaining third come from the surrounding regions.

In addition to languages, literature, humanities and natural sciences, the Academy 55plus offers age-appropriate offers in the areas of exercise, sport and games as well as dealing with new media. Other focal points are the promotion of encounters between older people from the partner cities and civic engagement.
Awards
In March 2012, the academy was awarded the Ludwig Metzger Prize from Sparkasse Darmstadt for its outstanding commitment to the good of the community and for promoting social and cultural interests as well as improving the quality of life for senior citizens .
