Akokan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Akokan is a mining settlement in the urban area of Arlit in Niger .

The settlement was created in the 1970s for the workers and employees of the Compagnie Minière d'Akouta (COMINAK), which exploits the nearby Akouta uranium mine . An administrative post ( poste administratif ) was set up in Akokan in 1979 , a lower administrative unit headed by a chef de poste administratif . According to the 2012 census, Akokan has 22,212 inhabitants. These live in 3234 households, of which 123 are rural households. At the 2001 census, the population was 21,927. There were 13,783 inhabitants in the 1988 census.

Akokan has a comparatively good urban infrastructure by Nigerian standards, including hotels, sports facilities and a cultural center. Extensive barracks settlements arose around the district, in which Tuareg and Tubu from the region settled. In 2009, Greenpeace found alarming levels of radioactive levels in and around Akokan. The French state-owned company Areva , which owns a relative majority in COMINAK, finally confirmed the allegations in 2010 and committed to cleaning up the affected areas.
