Akorn is a US company in the pharmaceutical industry. The company produces and sells medicinal products for human use as well as veterinary products and, in addition to its headquarters in Lake Forest , also has a location in Hettlingen in the canton of Zurich.

Akorn was founded in 1997 and among other things goes back to the pharmaceutical company Taylor Pharmacal, which existed since 1948. The company's shares have been traded on NASDAQ since 2007 .

In April 2017, the German Fresenius Group agreed to take over Akorn for $ 4.75 billion. In 2018, Fresenius announced that it wanted to withdraw from the purchase after receiving several anonymous reports that Akorn had falsified drug tests for FDA approvals. A subsequent legal dispute ended with the result that Fresenius did not have to take over Akorn because the Akorn management had covered up these facts.
