al-'Assal

Al-'Assal is a Coptic family who produced many scholars and scientists in Cairo during the Ayyubid dynasty in the early 13th century .

Family size

The family includes the following scholarly members:

  • Abu'l-Fadl ibn Abi Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Abi Sahl Girgis ibn Abi al-Yusr Yuhanna ibn al-'Assal,

his two sons:

  • al-Safi Abu'l-Fada-'il ibn al-'Assal and
  • As'ad Abu'l Farag Hibat-Allah ibn al-'Assal

as well as his two stepbrothers:

  • al-Mu'taman Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn al-'Assal and
  • Amgad Abu'l-Maid ibn al-'Assal.

The four provided significant contributions to theology and Bible studies , prepared the Coptic - Arabic grammar before and dictionaries and wrote many homiletic writings (writings on practical theology).
