The al-Abbas mosque is located above the grave shrine of Abbas ibn Ali in the city of Karbala in Iraq . It is located at the place where he is said to have died and was buried in the immediate vicinity of the Imam Husain shrine with the mosque of Imam Hussein , the second grandson of Mohammed . The sites are an important Shiite place of pilgrimage ( ziyāra ), especially for the Shiite Passion Play on the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala .

A space between the two holy places connects the two shrines of Imam Husain and Iman Abbas:

“The faithful then gather in the huge inner courtyard, lined with white marble and black granite, which connects the Imam Hussein mosque with that of his brother Abbas. There are tens of thousands of people on normal days, and millions on public holidays. Karbala in Iraq is one of the holiest cities for Shiite Muslims. "
