The ar-Rahman Legion ( Arabic فيلق الرحمن, DMG Faylaq ar-Raḥmān ; English also Legion of Rahman and Rahman Legion ) is a radical Islamist armed militia active in the Syrian war. It was founded in 2013 after its core group, the al-Bara Brigade, grew and other groups merged with it. Until the group surrendered as a result of Operation Damascus Steel by the Syrian army, it was particularly present in the eastern Ghouta . The group is said to be associated with the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood . At times it allied itself with the terrorist organization Haiʾat Tahrir asch-Scham against the Islamist militia Jaish al-Islam, which is supported by Saudi Arabia . On May 2, 2017, Abu Najib, a leader of the group, was killed in power struggles between the militia and the Jaish al-Islam east of Damascus. A militia commander, Abu 'Ali Dhiya Al-Shaghouri, was killed in fighting with Syrian Army troops in Eastern Ghuta on March 9, 2018. On March 22, the group agreed to an indefinite ceasefire agreement in East Ghouta, which went into effect the following day. Subsequently, the surrender and the withdrawal of the Islamist militia from the area were negotiated.
