Club history

Al-Talaba was founded in 1969 under the name al-Jameaa and adopted its current name in 1977. Al Talaba has been champion of Iraq five times. The greatest international success dates back to 1996 when the club reached the final of the Asian Cup Winners Cup , but lost to Bellmare Hiratsuka from Japan 2-1. As early as 1986/87, the “students” reached the final round of the Asian Club Championship at that time, now the AFC Champions League , but only finished fourth in the final score. In 1999 al-Talaba once again reached the semi-finals of the cup winners' competition. The club won their last national title with their second cup win in 2003.
