The Al-Zarara Gate ( Arabic قوس الزرارة, DMG Qaus az-Zarrāra ), also called Damascustor (بوابة دمشق / Bawābat Dimašq ), is a former city ​​gate to the city of Bethlehem in the West Bank .

The city of Bethlehem probably already had a city gate leading to the north during the time of the Canaanites . In Israelite times it was the main gate of the city and was on the road that led to Jerusalem , which is neighboring to the north . According to Christian tradition, Joseph and Mary should also have entered the city through this gate on their journey to Bethlehem.

The gate under the Eastern Roman Emperor was in the 6th century Justinian I built new. Another new building took place in the 14th century under the rule of the Ottomans .

The gate formed the north end of Bethlehem until the 19th century. The area outside the gate was not built on until the end of the 19th century.

The Al-Zarara gate is a gate tower with a slightly pointed arched passageway through which the Sternstraße passes. The tower extends over the entire width of the street between the adjacent rows of houses. Remains of the old city wall are still preserved at the gate.
