Al-Zarrar is a Pakistani main battle tank .

Behind the name is a technically upgraded version of the Chinese Type 59 . This project was started to bring the more than 1,000 obsolete models of this type in the Pakistani army at least approximately up to today's military and technical requirements. The most important changes are a 125 mm smoothbore cannon , an improved gear ratio and reinforced armor in the form of reactive additional plates and a mine protection on the underbody of the vehicle. The Al-Zarrar is an inexpensive technical emergency solution, but it is hardly sustainable, as the upgraded version itself can be described as already outdated.

It represents an intermediate stage on the way to Al-Khalid, which was developed with Chinese help, as the main weapon system of the Pakistani tank army.
