Aladdin Free Public License

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Aladdin Free Public License , or AFPL for short , was developed by L. Peter Deutsch to license Ghostscript and is derived from the GNU General Public License . However, it differs essentially in the following points:

  • The source code must be included with every distribution .
  • The software may not be sold; charging a copy or service fee is also not permitted.

The purpose of the ban on sales was that vendors who wanted to sell Ghostscript commercially with their product had to purchase a license for the software that was subject to a fee. This should achieve fairer remuneration for the developers.

Ghostscript has not been sold under the AFPL since 2006.
