Alamire is a tragedy in five acts by Voltaire . The text is the fourth version of Voltaire's tragedy Adélaïde du Guèsclin from 1734 , written in Berlin . The manuscript was found in Voltaire's estate, but was only published in 1985 as part of the Oxford edition due to its proximity to the third version.
action
The action takes place at an unspecified time in the Castilian city of Osma. With the changed role names, the text largely corresponds to the third version of the Adélaïde: Amélie ou le Duc de Foix .
Literary source and biographical references
Voltaire, disappointed by the mild reception of his Adélaïde du Guèsclin , listed only eleven times in Paris in 1734 and unprinted , revised the tragedy a total of three times from 1751–1752. The Alamire is the fourth and final version. It is mainly composed of text modules from the previous versions and, according to Cartwright, does not bring any real innovations.
Performances and contemporary reception
The Alamire tragedy remained unplayed after its discovery.
Going to press
The tragedy remained unprinted in the Voltaire estate after it was discovered. In a marginal note in the foreword to the Adélaïde du Guesclin in the Kehler Complete Edition, the editors justified the omission with the textual proximity to the version of the Duc de Foix . The Alamire was first published in 1985 in the Oxford work edition edited by Theodore Bestermann.
