Alaska Day

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Alaska Day is a public holiday in Alaska . It is celebrated on October 18, the anniversary of the formal transfer of Russian holdings in Alaska to the United States .

The official Alaska Day celebration is held annually in Sitka , where the handover was carried out in 1867 as part of a flag ceremony and a troop parade. The contract to buy Alaska from Russia had already taken place in March 1867 and will be celebrated on Seward's Day , but the representatives of the USA and Russia did not come to Fort Sitka for the official handover until October 18 .
