Seward's Day

The Seward's Day is a public holiday in Alaska . It is celebrated on the last Monday in March and commemorates the signing of the contract to buy Alaska from Russia on March 30, 1867.

The holiday is named after William H. Seward , the then Secretary of State of the United States , who negotiated the treaty with Russia .

The formal handover of Russian possessions to the United States will be commemorated with Alaska Day on October 18th.
