Alert Bay Public Library and Museum

The Alert Bay Public Library and Museum is both a small public library and a museum in the Canadian province of British Columbia .

The library opened in 1959. The 6700 books are available to every resident of Cormorant Island . This applies to both Alert Bay and the reserve .

The archive offers over 6,000 photographs, most of which have been digitized . There are also newspapers from 1939–1941 and 1951–1964, as well as the editions of the local daily newspaper, the North Island Gazette .

Numerous objects and works of art, such as a small totem pole by one of the most important artists of the Canadian west, the chief Mungo Martin , who belongs to the Kwakwaka'wakw , enrich the collection. The chief of the Kwakiutl is considered the carving artist of the century and played a major role in the renaissance of this art form among the Indians of the North American West. The place boasts of having the largest totem pole.

At the same time, with the U'mista Cultural Museum , he owns one of the most important collections on Vancouver Island on the history and culture of the First Nations on the island and its neighboring islands. This cultural center was established in 1980 to bring back the items necessary for the potlatch that had been appropriated by private and public collections. Music and dance performances can now also be seen there. The center supports scientific research on regional cultures.
