The Alexander Nevsky Bridge ( Russian Мост Александра Невского ) crosses the Neva in Saint Petersburg . It was named after Alexander Nevsky .

When the bridge, which was completed in 1965, was built, the steel cables corroded. As early as 1967, 56 cables tore and the bridge was closed to traffic (except for trolley buses ). The bridge continued to decline and in 1982 a 17 ton counterweight crashed. The bridge was completely closed and a ferry connection was set up. Traffic on the bridge was later resumed, but the structural defects were not remedied. The bridge was not structurally renovated until 2000–2001.
