Alexander Alexandrowitsch Scharow ( Russian Александр Александрович Жаров ; born August 11, 1964 in Chelyabinsk , Soviet Union ) is a Russian politician. From 2012 to 2020 he was chairman of Roskomnadzor , the state surveillance authority for mass media and the Internet.

Life

Sharov studied medicine in Chelyabinsk and graduated in 1987. He specialized as anesthesiologist and emergency doctor and worked in the Chelyabinsk District Hospital from 1987 to 1996.

In 1997 he moved to Moscow and worked, among other things, for a medical magazine. From 1998 to 1999 he was a consultant at RIA Novosti ; from 1999 to 2004 he was spokesman for the Russian Ministry of Health and from 2004 to 2006 the Prime Minister of Russia . From 2006 to 2007 Sharov was the deputy general director of the state broadcaster WGTRK and from 2007 to 2008 chairman of the press department of the Kremlin. He then became Deputy Minister of Communications and was chairman of Roskomnadzor from May 2012 to March 2020 .

Sanctions

In April 2018, the United States imposed sanctions on him and 23 other Russians.
