Alexander Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany

Alexander Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany (* around 1454 ; † August 7, 1485 ) was a son of the Scottish King James II and his wife Maria von Geldern . He was raised to Earl of March and Lord of Annandale in 1455 , Duke of Albany in 1458 , Earl of Mar and Lord of Garioch in 1482 .

Life

Alexander was first married to Catherine Sinclair, daughter of William Sinclair, 1st Earl of Caithness . The marriage was divorced due to the existing consanguinity after giving birth to two children:

  • Alexander († December 19, 1537), declared illegitimate in 1516, Bishop of Moray since 1528
  • Catherine ∞ Patrick Hamilton of Kincavil

Alexander was in 1479 because of conspiracy against the crown by his brother Jacob III. arrested but escaped to France. His lands were then confiscated. In 1480 he married Anne de la Tour (about 1463-1512), daughter of Bertrand VI, for the second time . , Count of Auvergne . With this he had a son:

  • John Stewart (1484–1536), 2nd Duke of Albany, Regent of Scotland 1516–1528

In agreement with the English King Edward IV , he declared himself King of Scotland in 1482. Shortly afterwards he reconciled with his brother and was completely rehabilitated in 1482. In 1483 all of his goods and titles were again confiscated and Alexander renewed his union with England. He invaded Scotland, but was defeated at the Battle of Lochmaben on July 22, 1484. He fled to France, where he died of an injury in a tournament in 1485.
