Alexander Stewart, 2nd Earl of Buchan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alexander Stewart, 2nd Earl of Buchan (* after 1465; † 1505 ), was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

His father was James Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan ; his mother was Margaret, daughter and heir to the Alexander Ogilvy of Auchterhouse. With the death of his father in 1499 he also took over his title as Earl of Buchan and Lord Auchterhouse .

Little is known about his life and short time as an Earl. His father signed over lands in the area of Kettings to him at the time of his first marriage; the same property was bequeathed to him again for his second marriage. In 1503 he called on Jacob IV as judge. It was about land ownership in the area of Kingedward, which since the time of Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany "was without an heir and legally belongs to the Earldom". However, the king ruled against Alexander , recognizing the possessions of the Lord of the Isles in the affected region.

Alexander was married twice. The first marriage was after January 10, 1490 with Isabel (also Isabella or Isobel), daughter of James Ogilvy, 1st Lord Ogilvy of Airlie ; due to close relatives (she was his cousin) this was only possible after the papal dispensation from Innocent VIII . The marriage remained childless, Isabel died before 1499. The second marriage was, also before 1499, with Margaret, daughter of William Ruthven, 1st Lord Ruthven. There was only one son from this marriage; John , his heir and later 3rd Earl.
