Alexander Wagner (artist)

Alexander Wagner (* 1978 ) is a German visual artist. Both painting and drawing play a central role in his overall artistic work . In his work, Wagner always resorts to a geometric design language that is reduced and abstracted in its composition.

life and work

Alexander Wagner completed his studies at the University of the Arts in Berlin in 2006 as a master class student . Some time before the end of his studies, Wagner took part in group exhibitions in Berlin , Zurich and Istanbul , as well as other group exhibitions in the USA and Italy .

Alexander Wagner mainly deals with painting in his work . Drawings, watercolors , screen prints , gouache and acrylic pictures have a permanent place in Wagner's repertoire. The artist's works are particularly characterized by their formal language. He chooses u. a. simple geometric shapes and transfers them to his subjects, "or even to the motifs that do not have any geometry, such as clouds or rain," as Friedrich Meschede explained. Wagner's works seem reduced to something essential and use the colors as a starting point. The approach to the forms in his work is also interesting. For example, Alexander Wagner made photographs on which a random geometry in the form of an everyday object can be recognized. These in turn can serve as the basis for a drawing, in which, in contrast to a photograph, “the visible things continue”. His latest works consist increasingly of wall paintings . a. were on view in the Kunsthalle Bielefeld . In doing so, Wagner puts the focus on spatial intervention, which responds to the existing exhibition architecture and changes its spatial experience.

Alexander Wagner is represented by the RaebervonStenglin gallery in Zurich . He lives and works in Berlin .
