The Alexander Column ( Russian : Александровская колонна, Aleksandrowskaja kolonna ) is a monument in Rostov-on-Don in Russia . It was built in 1894 in honor of the 25-year reign of Emperor Alexander II in the then independent Nakhichevan on Don .

The column was inaugurated on September 18, 1894, and the surrounding park became Alexander Park (today Vitja Tscherewitschkin Park ) on this occasion .

The eleven meter high Alexander column consists of a granite monolith crowned by a double-headed eagle on a square base. On two sides of the base plaques bearing the inscription . In memory of the 25 years of glorious reign of emperor Alexander II ( Въ память XXV лѣтія славнаго царствованія Императора Александра II ) and The Armenian community of Nakhichevan-on-Don 25 · IX · 1894 ( Отъ Нахичеванскаго на Дону армянскаго общества 25 IX 1894 ).

After the Russian Revolution , the column is the only tsarist monument that was not destroyed. Only the eagle and the memorial plaques were removed. In 1994 the Alexander Column was returned to its original state.
