Alexandre Levy (born November 10, 1864 in São Paulo , † January 17, 1892 ) was a Brazilian composer , pianist and conductor .

Life

His Jewish family came from France and were very active musically, his father founded the city's most important music business and was a clarinetist himself. Alexandre Levy gave piano concerts at the age of twelve and was predicted to have a career as a solo pianist. In his hometown Levy first founded the Clube Haydn , then the Clube Mendelssohn , which dedicated themselves to the cultivation of classical music.

He went down in Brazilian music history as the author of the Variações sobre um Tema Brasileiro , one of the first compositions to take up the musical traditions of Brazil. The most famous piece from it is Vem cá, Bitu . He was a pioneer of "romantic nationalism" that dominated Brazil at the turn of the century. Levy also composed pieces of the Brazilian tango Maxixe . In 1887 he spent some time in Paris and studied with Émile Durand . In the Suíte Brasileira from 1890, the term samba appears for the first time in a classical orchestral composition.
